The slopes of nearby Luosto offer a peaceful alpine experience, with gentle runs for families and longer descents for those who want more, and over 150 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails wind through ancient pine forests, open fells and snow-covered valleys. Hidden within the park lies one of Europe's few active amethyst mines open to visitors: ride a special snow transport across the fells, hear how the violet stones formed over two thousand million years ago and were treasured in Sámi folklore, and dig for your own lucky amethyst to carry home. The village stays small and walkable, and the drive from Rovaniemi Airport takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.
