Summer & Autumn in the North

Under the Midnight Sun.

Have you ever read a book outdoors at midnight, by sunlight? From early June to mid-July the sun never sets in Finnish Lapland. The evenings turn to gold, the rivers glow and nobody asks what time it is. Then, in September, the whole landscape catches colour: the ruska weeks, when the North turns red and gold and the first auroras return to the darkening sky.

The Nightless Night

In midsummer the sun dips towards the horizon, brushes it and rises again. The golden hour lasts until morning. Families paddle on still water at eleven in the evening, the lakeside sauna smokes gently and the children fall asleep mid-sentence with the sun still on the wall.

It is the gentlest season of the North: warm days, bright water and no hurry anywhere.

A Summer Villa in the Forest

The villas live a second life in summer. Mornings stretch long on the terrace, the forest paths smell of pine and wild herbs, and dinner moves outdoors: your chef cooks over the open fire at the kota while the evening refuses to end. The lake is always close for a swim, and the berries grow right at the doorstep.

Ruska: When the North Catches Colour

For two or three weeks in September, Lapland turns into its most colourful self. Birches go gold, aspens orange and the bogs glow copper red as far as the eye can see. The air is crisp, the trails are quiet and the mushrooms and berries are at their very best.

And as the nights darken, the northern lights return. Ruska is the season when you walk through colour by day and watch the sky dance in the evening.

When to Come

June to mid-July

The Midnight Sun

The sun stays above the horizon for weeks on end. Nightless nights, golden light on the water and the warmest days of the year.

Late July & August

The Harvest of Light

Warm days and quiet trails. Cloudberries ripen on the bogs, blueberries colour small fingers purple, and late in August the first auroras of autumn return.

September

The Ruska Weeks

The colours at their peak and the skies already dark by evening. Many northerners will tell you this is the most beautiful time of all.
